Chapter Thirteen

Aislinn

“The guys will be back tomorrow too,” Jay said, “and damn, I’ll be glad for it. Even with Isaac helpin’ me and Kev, I’ve never worked so hard in my life. We have got to find some more ranch hands.”

“It’s just making your muscles musclier. I approve,” Billie said through Jay’s speakerphone.

Jay, Shonda, and I were in the office, getting ready to close down for the day.

“I miss you so much, Jonathan. I can’t wait to see you.”

“I miss you too. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough.”

“My first Thanksgiving with my new family,” Billie said. “There will be pumpkin pie and whipped cream, right? You’re making pumpkin pie?”

Jay laughed. “Uh, no, you don’t want me to make it. But Finn’ll make it for you.”

“Okay, good.”

Jay made kissing noises into his phone and ducked out of the office, and Shonda groaned. “Good Lord, those two are so bad. How can you live with them?” She laughed.

“Yeah, it gets pretty old pretty fast,” I said, “but it’s cool too. Billie was so different before she and Jay got together.”

“Really? How so?”

“She was always funny and caring, but she was closed off. She put on a big front to everyone, you know, so we wouldn’t see her softer side. I guess she still does that, but not with Jay. And not with me. She’s my best friend.”

“Well, I’m glad you have someone in your life like her. I know I never have to worry about you if she’s around.”

“Why would you have to worry about me?”

“Oh, I just meant, she’s a great friend, that’s all. I had a friend like that once. It was nice to know she had my back no matter what.”

“What happened to her?”

“Oh, she… Well, she met a man.”

“So? She stopped being your friend because she found a boyfriend? That doesn’t sound like a great friend to me.”

“She didn’t do it on purpose, and there were other factors.” Shonda sighed across the room. “The snow is so pretty. I wish you could see it. It’s really fine, and it’s glittering as it falls.”

I didn’t need to see it. I felt it on my face every time I was outside. I tasted it on my tongue and listened to the beautiful silence that came with every snowfall. “What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Did I tell you Theo’s coming here? I didn’t invite him. Jay did.” Now I sighed.

“Oh, I, well… I’m going back to Nevada. Didn’t I tell you that?”

“No.”

“I’m sure I did. You must’ve forgotten. That’s what I’m doing. My… my sister is there.”

“You have a sister? That’s nice. Will you have a big dinner together?”

“Yes. I do have a sister, and we’ll probably have a turkey. And a ham. And all the sides. You know. Big family thing.” She sounded so chipper, but why did I get the feeling she was lying to me?

“You never talk about her.”

“No? Oh, well, she’s… sick, and I guess I don’t really like to think about it.”

“What’s wrong with her?”

“She’s… mentally ill.
